Maximising learning, support and respect
At Beal we measure our success by the desired outcomes for students. These are:
- Worthwhile work
- Development of a broad skill set / spotting and nurturing talent
- Equality of opportunity and experience
- 5 A*- C including English and maths. or equivalent Level 2 qualification
- Meaningful progression opportunities
We know that Beal is a very special school and we were proud to have this confirmed by Ofsted when they judged us to be OUTSTANDING in all categories in March 2012. During their visit they observed a learning environment that has been created to challenge, support and inspire. They saw well qualified, committed and caring teachers who encourage every student to develop their full potential and personality. They commended our ‘exemplary behaviour, mutual respect and highly inclusive culture’; and we were pleased that they recognised the outstanding progress made by students and the high standards reached.
Our students proved themselves worthy of this praise, again, with their superb examination results this year. Their success at Key Stage 4 exceeds our highest ever results – 80% A*- C including English and Maths with 95% of students achieving 5A* – C grades. Key Stage 5 results are even better this year with an average point score of 786 and contrary to the national trend, 12% of all students achieved the coveted straight A*/A grades meaning that 92% of our Sixth Form can take their place at the university of their choice. However, as an inclusive school, of most significance for us is our anticipated Value Added score of 1042 for Year 11 meaning considerably enhanced progression and life choices for all students. This phenomenal achievement reflects the consistently hard work of students and teachers, placing us in the top 5% of schools.
This success means that we have welcomed the expansion of Beal High School to 12 forms of entry with confidence. This Year 7 cohort is the first of 360 students and they are settling well into the Beal team. We have planned carefully for their arrival and we know that this exciting venture will increase the opportunities for many more students to benefit from our high quality provision. Many of the students experienced our Summer School in August, enjoying a range of fun activities designed to support literacy, and numeracy, and ensure a smooth transition. Our Sixth Form continues to grow and our Communication and Learning Department has increased in size; providing an exciting and purposeful opportunity for post 16 students.
As well as maximising achievement for Beal students, we continue to act as Academy Sponsor for The Forest Academy. Working in partnership has sharpened our own practice and we look forward to sustaining this improvement as both schools go from strength to strength.
Our Executive Headteacher is a National Leader of Education and has led the school since 1995. We have a commitment to distributed leadership and an Associate Headteacher leads the school on a daily basis; she is supported by a hardworking, leadership team who are skilled and experienced. We recruit high quality teaching and support staff – we are always fully staffed – and have a healthy mix of experienced and newly qualified teachers; we make their Continuing Professional Development a priority. The commitment of the staff to the work of the school, and the students, contributes significantly to our success.
Our school improvement work has been extended through the development of NELTA. Our commitment to inclusive education means that in September 2014 we will open the Beal Business and Innovation Hub, approved by the DfE offering alternative provision for students. We are creating a coherent approach that aligns education, training, skills and employment services on our campus to raise standards in education for all; we believe every young person deserves the best education possible.
As a successful school, we are confident not complacent. We know what works and we maintain it. We have the capacity to continue to evolve and develop as the educational landscape changes and we will do that with integrity and substance. Leading the way in this exciting time means that Beal students benefit from the most current, and relevant, practice and opportunity.
Students are happy at Beal High School; they work hard and make rapid progress. They are proud of their school and of what we achieve together. We look forward to welcoming your son/daughter to join us as we continue this tradition, preparing confident young people for the excitement and challenge of the 21st century.
