NELTA is delighted to offer the assessment-only route to teaching.

This route is ideal for experienced graduate teachers (UK or overseas) who have taught for a minimum of two years as unqualified teachers in at least two UK secondary schools but do not currently have QTS.

This route does not require a period of training as it is expected that teachers who choose this route are already experienced. However this is a route for teachers who wish to gain QTS and so all potential applicants will have an interview and pre-registration check in their school to ascertain their suitability before they can be formally registered on this route.

If the selection requirements are met candidates will be asked to present a portfolio of evidence against the Teachers’ standards of all their relevant teaching experience, including evidence of contrasting second-school experience. Evidence provided against the standards must be across the full ability range and across the age range of assessment. Please note this may mean that candidates supported by special schools or PRUs may need to gain additional experience and evidence.

The Assessment Only Route is expected to last no more than 3 months and if successful NELTA will make a recommendation for QTS.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Hold a UK first degree or equivalent qualification (NARIC checked in the case of overseas-trained teachers). We recommend that potential applicants hold a degree of which 50% of the content is in the subject they wish to teach. AOR candidates who have been teaching a subject that is not 50% of their degree may be asked to provide additional evidence of their subject knowledge in order for them to meet TS3.
  • Have achieved a standard equivalent to a Grade C in the GCSE examinations in English language and Mathematics. (NARIC checked in the case of overseas-trained teachers).
  • Have been cleared in relation to Disclosure and Baring Service (DBS) and Occupational Health checks.
  • Have at least 2 years teaching experience across the full ability range and across the age range of assessment in at least two different UK secondary schools or FE settings. This should be full class responsibility equivalent to a full time teaching position of approximately 20-25 hours. If the teaching experience is still only in one school applicants will be asked to do a 4-6 week teaching placement in a contrasting secondary school. Candidates must demonstrate that they are meeting the Teachers’ Standards across the full ability range and across the age range of assessment.
  • Have the support of the school which will provide mentor support and environment to undertake the appropriate assessment. NELTA as the AO provider will check that the school has the capacity to support you to provide evidence that you have met the Teacher’ Standards across the age range of assessment.

Overseas Qualification

It is important that potential applicants check the entry requirements carefully before submitting an application form as there are fees for the application process and these are non-refundable.
